- During the 1930s, BBC Radio faced heavy competition for listeners from many commercial radio stations based on the continent of Europe which were aiming their English language transmissions at the British Isles. By 1938 on Sundays, it was estimated that the BBC had lost up to 80% of its listening audience to such stations as Radio Normandy and Radio Luxembourg.
